Why Switching to Natural Deodorant Can Be a Smelly Adventure (At First!)

Why Natural Deodorant Doesn’t Always Work Right Away

Have you ever switched to a natural deodorant only to think, “This stuff doesn’t work”?

You’re not alone.

Many people make the switch from conventional antiperspirants to natural deodorants expecting immediate results, only to find themselves feeling sweatier or noticing more odour than they’re used to. Often, the natural deodorant gets the blame when in reality, your body is simply going through an adjustment period.

Why Does This Happen?

Traditional antiperspirants and natural deodorants work very differently.

Antiperspirants use aluminum compounds to temporarily block your sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface.

Natural deodorants don’t stop your body from sweating. Instead, they work by helping to neutralize odour and support a healthy balance of the bacteria that naturally live on your skin.

And here’s something many people don’t realize: sweat itself doesn’t actually smell. Body odour occurs when bacteria break down certain compounds found in sweat produced by your underarm glands.

When you stop using antiperspirants, your sweat glands begin functioning normally again and your underarm microbiome starts adapting to its new environment. During this transition, many people notice changes in sweating and body odour.

Is It a Detox?

One of the biggest misconceptions about switching to natural deodorant is the idea of an “armpit detox.”

In reality, your body doesn’t detox through sweat. Your liver and kidneys handle that important job.

What you’re experiencing is simply your body adjusting to a different way of managing odour and perspiration.

How Long Does the Adjustment Period Last?

Everyone is different, but many people find the transition lasts anywhere from two to four weeks.

During this time, you may notice:

  • Increased sweating
  • Changes in body odour
  • The need to reapply deodorant during the day
  • More noticeable odour after exercise or hot weather

The good news is that for most people, these changes are temporary.

My Personal Experience Switching to Natural Deodorant

When I first switched to natural deodorant, I had no idea there was an adjustment period.

Honestly, I thought it simply wasn’t working.

After years of using conventional antiperspirants, I suddenly felt sweatier and noticed more odour than I was used to. My first instinct was to go back to the chemically laden products I had relied on for years.

Instead, I decided to do some research.

What I discovered was that many people experience an adjustment period when switching from antiperspirants to natural deodorants. Since natural deodorants don’t block your sweat glands the way conventional antiperspirants do, your body and your underarm microbiome need time to adapt.

So I stuck with it.

For me, it took about three weeks before everything settled down and my natural deodorant started working like a charm.

That was five years ago.

Five years after making the switch, my friend Veronica and I began creating the kind of natural deodorant we wished we’d had when we first started the journey ourselves.

Under the Herbal Moments label, we handcraft our deodorant in two botanical blends: Lavender Sage and Yarrow & Sweet Orange.

Most importantly, it’s been thoroughly tested under real farm-life conditions and has passed the ultimate barn chore test.

If it can survive summer barn chores, hauling hay, mucking stalls, and chasing horses around the farm, I can confidently say it can handle just about anything!

The Bottom Line

If you’re currently in that awkward adjustment phase and wondering if natural deodorant can really work, I encourage you to give your body the time it needs to adapt before giving up.

Sometimes the hardest part of switching to natural products isn’t finding the right product — it’s simply giving your body the time it needs to adjust.

For many of us, the results are absolutely worth the wait.
